The Siberian Husky is a large sized dog which as the name suggests originated in Northern Siberian and was originally bred for sled pulling and reindeer herding. They can live up to 14 years, weigh up to 60 lbs and reach a height of 12 inches (at the shoulder).
Huskies are very distinctive dogs owing this to their beautiful coat patterns and striking head markings. Huskies are friendly, gentle dogs who are good with people. Huskies like to howl but rarely bark. Their lack of barking does not make them a good watchdog. They are so gentle a breed that they are likely to assist an intruder rather than scare them away. As they are pack animals they need to be shown strong leadership when training and once trained they are loyal and protective to their owner. If socialised correctly initially Huskies will get along well with other family pets but they have a strong hunting drive so it is in their breeding to hunt and will chase anything that moves
Huskies have dense, waterproof coats which they shed twice a year when big clumps of hair fall out at a time. Brushing once or twice a week is recommended but more often during moulting.
A Husky is an extremely active dog with great stamina and will therefore require a large outside space and lots of exercise. Thus, they need a good lead and lots of dog toys. Unfortunately, as a Husky is prone to straying it must be kept on a lead most of the time. Known as escape artists, ensure your garden is secure as a Husky can jump, chew through or dig under most fences.
