The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is thought to have originated in the east and made its way to Europe in the 16th Century. Once is Europe, they were developed into the toy breed they are today. King Charles II of England’s favourite breed of dog was this small spaniel, hence the name King Charles Spaniel.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels can live up to 11 years, weight up to 18lbs and reach a height of 12 inches (at the shoulder).
A great choice as a family pet as they are the extremely well-mannered dogs and love children. They will also make an excellent companion for the elderly, being good natured and affectionate. Cavaliers are extremely loyal and dote on their owners. Easily adaptable dogs who will happily fit in with either city or country living. They are easily as comfortable sitting on their owner’s lap as they are out and about searching out new scents. Not the easiest of dogs to train but the role of the King Charles Spaniel is not about high levels of obedience or agility but about companionship. As they are not aggressive by nature they are good with other family pets and other dogs in general.
They are not yappy dogs but will bark at strangers, however their sweet nature prevents them from ever being a guard dog.
While a Cavalier King Charles loves to be a lap dog and snoozing on the couch beside its owner, they do love to play and work off their excess energy outside daily. A regular walk or play time in the garden is recommended. Despite their coat being long and silky they do not need any special grooming other than regular brushing to remove dead hairs.
