Kennel For A Dachshund

When choosing a kennel for a Dachshund it is important that your dog will have enough room to move around comfortably inside. We suggest our small dog kennel for a Dachshund. Please check the dimensions of the kennel to ensure you choose the correct sized kennel for your dog.

Dachshunds orginated from Germany in the 17th Century as a hunting dog, mainly to hunt badgers. The name Dachshund translates as 'badger dogs'. Dachshunds are decended from the German Schweisshund. They were then crossed with spaniel breeds and terriers to gain certain hunting qualities and to also get a wirehaired and longhaired coat type. There are three diffferent types of dachshunds, smooth haired, wirehaired and longhaired.

Dachshunds have a lifespan 12-14 years. A standard dachshund can grow to a height of 14-18 inches and weight around 16-32 pounds. While a miniature dachshund can grow up to around 14 inches and weight up to 11 pounds.

Dachshunds have a big personality! They are kind, lively, a talented hunter and a great protector of their owners. They have a high tendency to bark making them an excellent watchdog. Dachshunds have a high affection level and a high playfulness level. They can be great with kids once they are trained to know who is in charge and introduced to kids slowly while he gets to know them. Dachshunds can get along well with other dogs once they are socialised from an early age. If you get another dog then your must not expect your dachshund to be instantly ok with another dog, you will need to introduce them slowly and in a calm environment.

A positive and persistance approach to training a dachshund is required. They can be easily distracted by scents around them so you will need to be patient with them while training them. Regular walks but not long ones and lots of playtime with their favourite toys is required for Dachshunds. Smooth haired dachshunds are the easiest to care for as they only need a quick grooming with a hand glove or soft brush once a week. Longhaired dachshunds need regular brushing to stop their coat from knotting. Wirehaired dachshunds need the most attention when grooming as their coat must be kept trimmed. All three types of dachshunds will need to have their ears checked often as they're long ears can be prone to infection.
