How To Maintain a Dog Kennel

Like any garden furniture, care should be taken to maintain your dog kennel’s condition. We have compiled a list of some factors that deserve consideration.

Painting Your Kennel

We recommend that shortly after purchase and then annually after that, that you treat your kennel with an animal friendly wood preservative. This helps to extend the life of the kennel. Ask your local DIY store as to which brand would be best suited. If you are considering painting your kennel at all just ensure that you use an animal friendly wood paint.

Minor Repairs

As with all garden furniture, your kennel will need minor repairs over time. These need to be carried out correctly in order to ensure that the kennel remains a safe place for your dog. For this reason, it may be advisable to ensure the person that carries out said repairs is a competent person for the job.

Chewing

Some dogs just have a tendency to chew kennels. There are ways however to stop them from doing so. The main reason that a dog would chew a kennel is boredom. This can be helped by ensuring that they have lots of chew toys in their kennel. You need to provide other things for them to chew in order to stop them from chewing the actual kennel.

Cleaning

The kennel should be cleaned once a week in order to keep it looking and smelling nice for your dog. If you have a dog bed or pillow in the kennel this should be washed. If you use a bedding such as straw this should be changed. Keeping the kennel clean will make sure that it is a place that the dog wants to continue to call their own.
