Do Guinea Pigs Make A Good Family Pet?

There are many reasons to keep guinea pigs, one being that they make brilliant pets because they are so easy to look after and almost everyone will absolutely love them.

Adults and Guinea Pigs

A guinea pig does not need much adult attention as they just need to be fed and cleaned out and your kids will look after the rest. They are very strong and robust, so a guinea pig is easily kept healthy. A Guinea Pig is not expensive to keep, because they don’t eat much food or require vet visits. The hutch will take up little space either in your garden or house.

Kids and Guinea Pigs

Kids love guinea pigs. It gives them a sense of responsibility because they now have a pet to care for. Their new pet will provide hours of endless entertainment for your children. They love walking it around on its harnessbrushing its hair, petting it, and feeding it some of yummy treats. They will love having a new guinea pig that they can be proud to show off to their friends and care for. The whole experience of keeping a guinea pig will give your kids memories that they will cherish for the rest of their lives.

Guinea pigs are big characters, despite their small size, and although some may look the same, each one has its own personality traits.  It’s a good idea for your child to spend a little time with a guinea pig before choosing one as a pet, as your child may prefer a boisterous and outgoing piggy, or indeed one that is shy and reserved.   Your child will get instant feedback when their pet is happy, as guinea pigs purr, just like a cat!

Compared to other small pets like rabbits and hamsters, young kids can find it easier to handle guinea pigs. Guinea pigs like to be handled, while rabbits prefer to be down on the floor and can be hurt if trying to jump from a child’s over-enthusiastic grasp!  Hamsters and gerbils can be skittish, while guinea pigs are less nervous.

However, as with any pet, we recommend supervising younger children around guinea pigs, to ensure they are both kept safe.

If you are looking for a really easy to care for pet that your children will love, Guinea Pigs are the pet for you.
