Breeds of Guinea Pig

These are some of our favourite breeds of guinea pig.

The American Guinea Pig

The American is the most common type of Guinea Pig. They have a great temperament and are recommended for children. This breed has short hair making it very easy to take care of.

The Abyssinian Guinea Pig

The Abyssinian is one of the more high maintenance breeds. Their very excitable nature does not make them suitable for some owners. They have long hair with rosettes (swirls). This breed is often showed. When showing and Abyssinian it should have 10 rosettes that are round with pinpoint centre. The ridges between the rosettes should be straight.

The Peruvian Guinea Pig

The Peruvian has the longest hair of all the Guinea Pigs. Because of this the breed requires daily grooming. They are very alert, curious and sweet. Making them brilliant pets for children.

The Silkie Guinea Pig

The Silkie is often nicknamed the Sheltie. They have gorgeous long, smooth hair that flows back over their bodies. If an adult is willing to take the responsibility of grooming this breed, the children will have a wonderful time playing with it.

The Teddy Guinea Pig

The Teddy tends to have a short, dense coat that usually stands up all over the body. Requiring low maintenance, with just the occasional brushing needed, this breed is suitable for people of all ages. There is a soft coat variety and a coarser coat variety. The Teddy, as the name suggests is cute and cuddly just like a teddy bear.

The Texel Guinea Pig

The Texel has curly, soft hair. Making it the most successful show breed. These are most suited to a person who wants to show off their beautiful guinea pigs.

The White Crested Guinea Pig

As the name suggests the White Crested Guinea Pig has a white crown on its head. They are very low maintenance as there short smooth coat is easily groomed. Many of their charterastics are similar to the American, meaning they are great for kids.

The Rex Guinea Pig

The Rex Guinea Pig has short, wool like fur. They have droopy ears and a rough textured coat. Children adore these little Guinea Pigs, mainly because of their wierd textured coat.
