History & Origin / Background
Originating from Yorkshire, England, "Yorkies’ as they affectionately known have steadily grown to become one of the most popular companion breeds in Great Britain and North America. Despite their popularity as ‘toy dogs’ today, the Yorkshire Terrier was originally a working dog used by miners to catch rats and vermin.

Characteristics
Possessing the classic Terrier temperament, Yorkshire Terriers are energetic, active and at times stubborn. Quick to forget their small size, they love being the centre of attention and thrive off of human interaction and companionship. Their coat is long and straight, while their face is small and disguised by bushy whiskers. Excessive barking may need to be controlled

Temperament
Like all Terriers, the Yorkie is strong willed and often stubborn. Generally busy about the home and affectionate with owners and family, Yorkshire Terriers are lovable companions who despite their stubborn streak, will remain loyal and appreciate every minute of attention they receive.

Suitability as a pet
Suitable for owners of any age or experience, the Yorkshire Terrier is an extremely easy dog to keep for anyone who has the time. Due to their love of play and human interaction, they should not be left alone for long periods of time. Their long coats, if kept this way, can require regular brushing and will bring in mud and dirt from outside. The hair in front of its eyes also needs to be tied up or clipped to ensure clear sight. Yorkies live to form bonds with people and will easily become your new best friend.

Size and Lifespan
Yorkshire Terriers are a small breed, when fully grown height typically ranges from 22 to 24 cm and weight a meagre 2 to 3 kg. Potential owners can expect a typical lifespan of up to 14 years.
