History & Origin / Background
Unsurprisingly, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier originates from Staffordshire, England in the 1800′s. A result of crossing local Bulldog’s with the now extinct English Terrier, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier maintained the stocky muscled physique of the Bulldog while gaining speed and agility with a longer head and neck. Originally used in organized dog fights and bull baiting, the Bull Terrier today is a popular family companion.

Characteristics
A solid block of muscle, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier has a smooth, tight fitting coat that comes in almost any colour. Their head is broad and thick, while their legs are set wide apart, giving them great balance and mobility. They thrive on affection and will commit themselves to be loved as well as part of the family.

Temperament
The Bull Terriers temperament is probably its biggest downfall. Through no fault of its own, they retain their fighting instincts and although calm and affectionate when with family, they can easily snap and attack unfamiliar dogs. Selective breeding has significantly reduced this trait but it is important to note its presence is not entirely eliminated. Aside from this tendency, Bull Terriers are loyal and intelligent dogs.

Suitability as a pet
The Stafford can be considered a low maintenance breed as they require minimal grooming and exercise. They thrive off of human interaction and will not react well to being left alone or ignored for long periods of time. These are dogs that will look to form bonds with you and your family, becoming a lifelong companion. Their often spontaneous aggression towards strange dogs means that when walked Stafford’s cannot be taken off the lead.

Size and Lifespan
Height can range between 36 and 41 cm while weight varies from 11 to 17 kg. Owners can expect a typical lifespan of between 11 and 12 years.
