History & Origin / Background
Originally developed by the Inuit tribe known as the ‘Chukchi’, the Siberian Husky is an athletic breed known for their incredible work capacity and endurance. They developed this stamina as a result of their initial use, pulling heavy sleds over great distances in the coldest climates. Today the Siberian Husky is most commonly a companion dog.

Characteristics
Siberian Huskies are not only a standout breed because of their work rate; they are also unique in appearance. One of a handful of breeds capable of having blue, brown, hazel and non-solid coloured eyes; it is not uncommon for Siberian Husky’s to have two different coloured eyes. Their legs are muscular and straight with good bone density while their coat has two layers, a dense undercoat and a longer rough top coat. Always energetic and fond of exercise, Siberian Huskies are loyal, extroverted and intelligent dogs.

Temperament
Well known for extremely calm temperament, it is not surprising that Siberian Huskies have become popular as family dogs. Independent yet affectionate, Siberian Huskies are generally strong willed and at times stubborn, but always devoted to their owner and family.

Suitability as a pet
Due to the Siberian Husky’s history as both a working dog and a breed raised in packs, it is important that these dogs understand from an early age who is in charge. Their high energy levels and love of exercise are needs that must be met. This means several miles of walking/running every day are required to prevent boredom. Their coat will shed in clumps and they are not well suited to hot climates. The Siberian Husky is certainly not for everyone, but any experienced, strong willed owner who can meet its needs, will find a lifelong companion who will appreciate and return every minute of attention they receive.

Size and Lifespan
Siberian Huskies typically grow to s full height and weight of between 51 and 60 cm and 16 and 27 kg. Their average lifespan is 11 years but when well kept can expect to live up to 13.
