Shih Tzu

Shih_Tzu

History & Origin / Background
Commonly confused with the Lhasa Apso as a result of their similar appearances, the Shih Tzu is a popular and playful breed. Shih Tzu roughly translates to "lion", accounting for this breeds mindset. Despite being small and cute, these long haired companions are far from afraid to stand up for themselves. Originating in China in the 1600s the Shih Tzu was bred in the Chinese Royal Court.

Characteristics
More playful and less distant than its lookalike, Shih Tzu’s have but one purpose, to please and give love to their owners. Generally lively and energetic, Shih Tzu’s have a long and dense topcoat with a distinctive black nose surrounded by a long, silky moustache.

Temperament
Commonly found doting on their owner, Shih Tzu’s are friendly to all from children to strangers. They thoroughly enjoy company from almost anyone and should happily move about the home from day to day.

Suitability as a pet
Shih Tzu’s are a small breed and as a result require minimal exercise. However, their signature coats will need significant attention. When outside mud and dirt can gather causing mats to form, so regular grooming and brushing is a must. The hair on its forehead can often obstruct its vision and must be clipped or tied back to ensure clear vision. Happy and full of fun, Shih Tzu’s will provide love and entertainment that is second to none.

Size and Lifespan
Typically between 25 and 27 cm in height and between 5 and 7 kg in weight, Shih Tzu’s have a long life expectancy of 14 to 14 years.
