History & Origin / Background
The Samoyeds origin lies in Siberia where they were developed by a nomadic people of the same name, the ‘Samoyed’. Initially bred for herding/hunting reindeer, pulling sleds as well as guarding, the Samoyed breed was held in high regard by its people. They greatly appreciated the work these dogs performed for them and considered them part of their families, allowing them to sleep in their tents and eat with them.
Characteristics
Samoyeds are a medium sized breed with an extremely soft, thick white coat. Their ears are small and set wide apart while their tail is long and bushy. Friendly and affectionate, Samoyeds particular enjoy human companionship and are excellent with children. Due to their arctic origins, Samoyeds thick coat can cause them problems in warm climates.
Temperament
Gentle, loving and loyal, Samoyeds should be even tempered, patient and rarely show signs of aggression. Their history lies with people and as a result they react well with almost anyone.
Suitability as a pet
Samoyeds are extremely companionable and love to spend every moment of every day with their family. They will follow you around and are more than happy to become the centre of your life. Daily exercise is needed and their coat requires grooming including weekly brushing. Samoyeds will shed their coat twice a year and are not suited to excessively warm climates. These dogs will suit anyone who is looking for a loving, affectionate and extremely companionable breed that will return every ounce of attention it receives.
Size and Lifespan
Typically between 45 and 55 cm in height and 23 and 30 kg in weight, Samoyeds have an average life expectancy of 12 years.
