History & Origin / Background
Originating from Rottweil, southern Germany in the 1800′s, the Rottweiler was initially bred to drive cattle as well as guard. We can also date the Rottweiler back as far as Roman times, where they would travel alongside the army, carefully guarding while helping to herd the cattle. Today Rottweilers are used as police, army and security dogs due to their intelligence and distinct ability to follow commands.
Characteristics
Rottweilers are confident, steady and fearless. Always affectionate and loyal towards their owner, they are extremely territorial and will be distant and weary of strangers. Their build is sturdy and lean with a coarse, flat top coat. Legs are thickly boned with the hind legs longer than the front, while their strength of jaw and bite is ferocious. Extremely well suited to learning commands, Rottweilers are intelligent and quick to learn.
Temperament
Rottweilers are by nature territorial and posses a natural instinct to defend that which they consider their home. The Rottweiler is a breed that must learn from an early age its position in the home. Any problems relating to aggression with Rottweilers generally stems from a lack of proper obedience training from an early age. These are intuitive dogs that will learn once taught.
Suitability as a pet
Proper socialization and obedience training are a must with any Rottweiler; this should be done from as early as possible. Like any working dog, the Rottweiler responds well to direction and instruction from its owner, who it must learn is in charge when young. They require minimal grooming and coat maintenance, but thrive off of regular exercise and activity. While distant with strangers, in the hands of an experienced strong willed owner, a Rottweiler can become a loving, loyal and affectionate companion.
Size and Lifespan
Rottweilers range between 58 and 70 cm in height while weight can vary between 40 and 50 kg. Average life expectancy for a Rottweiler is roughly 11 to 12 years.
