History & Origin / Background
The Rhodesian Ridgeback takes its name from the line of hair running down the centre of its spine from head to tail. This hair runs against the grain of the rest of the hair on its body making it stand out significantly. Originating in South Africa, the first white settlers noticed natives using these dogs for hunting and decided to use the Ridgebacks themselves. The Rhodesian Ridgeback today is most likely a result of a cross between the Cuban Bloodhound and the Hottentots hunting dog (Hottentots was the name given by settlers to the native tribe).
Characteristics
Fast, strong and intelligent, the Rhodesian Ridgeback is an extremely athletic breed. Their coat is short and glossy while their thick, broad shoulders are the platform for a powerful, well muscled neck. Usually a light to red wheaten colour to blend in with its native surroundings, the Rhodesian Ridgeback is a loyal and affectionate breed that is quick to learn.
Temperament
Rhodesian Ridgebacks are commonly even tempered. While they may be reserved with strangers, they are a people orientated breed who love the company of their owner. Exceptionally patient with children, the Rhodesian Ridgeback will quickly become loyal, loving and far more than a pet, but a member of the family.
Suitability as a pet
Due to their athletic nature, Ridgebacks love exercise and have a great love for chasing. Their short coat requires little to no grooming and they react well with other domestic pets. Alert and attentive, they will bark at the sign of any intrusion making them great watchdogs. Their fondness of human company combined with their loyalty, make them outstanding family pets.
Size and Lifespan
Weighing between 30 and 40 kg, Rhodesian Ridgebacks usually grow to a height of between 60 and 70 cm. Potential owners can expect an average lifespan of 12 to 13 years.
