History & Origin / Background
While most associate the Poodle with glamour and good looks, their history tells a different story. Intelligent and hard working, Poodles were originally used as water retrievers in Germany. The name Poodle, is said to come from the German word ‘Pudel’, meaning to splash in water. We can also relate the Poodles signature appearance with its history as a water retriever. The pom-poms on its legs and tail now synonymous with the Poodles appearance were a result of intentional trimming. This would allow the Poodle to swim easier in water as its coat when grown to full length all over, is quite thick and would’ve impeded movement while swimming.
Characteristics
There are three varieties of Poodle; the standard, the toy and the miniature. The only significant difference between them all however, is simply size. All three variations are extremely intelligent, alert and energetic, with a distinct ability to learn commands. Their coat is woolly and springy; ears are covered with thick, wavy hair, while their legs are straight and parallel.
Temperament
Poodles are generally lively, friendly and extroverted. They react well with other pets and are extremely responsive.
Suitability as a pet
The Poodle is an extremely popular breed with experienced and first time owners alike. Those with experience will enjoy excessively grooming and training their Poodle, while first timers will revel in an intelligent, loving and receptive companion. Like all dogs they require exercise, a balanced diet, combined with loving attention and care.
Size and Lifespan
The size, weight and life expectancy of any Poodle depends on the variety. The toy will weigh between 6 and 8 kg and grow to a height of between 25 and 28 cm. The miniature can grow between 28 and 38 cm and weigh between 12 and 14kg. Lastly, the standard Poodle will weigh between 14 and 19 kg, growing to a height of roughly 34 to 38 cm. The life expectancy of all three varieties ranges from 14 to an incredible 17 years if great care is taken.
