History & Origin / Background
Today the Pomeranian is a small, lovable toy dog. It was however originally a much bigger breed, helping to herd sheep as well as guard farms and homes. They take their name from Pomerania, the European region in which they were initially found. This area today makes up modern day Poland and Germany. Pomeranians rose to fame when Queen Victoria had them shipped from Florence, Italy to her royal kennels in Great Britain.
Characteristics
Outgoing and friendly, Pomeranians will happily slot into any family. Today, the Pomeranian is small and fox like with small and erect ears. Their coat is thick and bushy while their tail lies tight to the side of their body. Exceptionally intelligent and full of energy, Pomeranians are loyal and protective of their owners despite their small stature.
Temperament
Pomeranians are often described as alert and extroverted. Their level of intelligence makes them easy to train and they are rarely aggressive.
Suitability as a pet
The friendly and sociable nature of Pomeranians makes them extremely popular as family dogs. They love to play and thoroughly enjoy human interaction and company. Their coat requires regular grooming and it may bring in mud and dirt from outside. Anyone who can spend the necessary time to groom and play with these lovable dogs will get in return a lifelong, affectionate companion.
Size and Lifespan
Height typically ranges from 22 to 28 cm while weight varies between 2 and 4 kg. Pomeranians have a particularly long life expectancy of close to 15 years.
