Papillon

Papillon

History & Origin / Background
The earliest evidence we have of the Papillon is from French paintings dated to the 1200′s. At this time the Papillon was known as the far less endearing Dwarf Spaniel. It was not until they began to develop their trademark pointed ears that the Papillon took its name that we know it by today. Papillon means butterfly in French, which accurately describes the appearance of this breeds ears.

Characteristics
A friendly, lovable toy dog, Papillon’s are easily pleased. More than happy to live outside or inside, in the countryside or in the city, the Papillon is a breed that will readily adapt to the lifestyle of its owner. They are intelligent dogs that respond well to training and often excel in obedience in the show ring. Its upright, round-tipped ears are its trademark, while its coat is silky and smooth.

Temperament
Always cheerful and alert, Papillon’s are even tempered. Shyness or aggression can be considered uncharacteristic and rare.

Suitability as a pet
Papillon’s are by nature companion dogs so regular human interaction is required to keep them happy. These are not the type of dog to be left at home alone for long periods of time. Their coats do require care, including bathing and brushing, but these intelligent dogs are easily trained and follow commands well. A gentle, affectionate owner who will readily play and give attention to these energetic dogs is recommended.

Size and Lifespan
Height ranges from 20 to 28 cm and weight between 4 and 5 kg. Papillon’s typically live up to 14 years.
