Mastiff

History & Origin / Background
The strong and powerful Mastiff was originally bred in England where they were used as watch and guard dogs. From there they were brought to Rome, Italy, by Caesar who was impressed with the sheer size and fearless nature of the Mastiff. Caesar had them participate in bull baiting as well as fights with lions and even gladiators. Today, the Mastiff is a rare sight.

Characteristics
One of the largest breeds in the world, the Mastiff has a short, tight coat with straight strongly boned legs that support its thick, burly body. Always alert and particularly protective, only the most determined of intruders would dare take on a Mastiff. They love to please and will regularly seek affection from their owner.

Temperament
Good natured and patient, Mastiffs should be friendly and calm with strangers once socialized from an early age. They are naturally territorial and will require time when young to control this tendency.

Suitability as a pet
Mastiffs are best suited to suburban or country living, mainly due to their size and the space they require. Unsurprisingly, they consume a lot of food so this should also be taken into account. Once space and feeding requirements can be met, the Mastiff is an otherwise low maintenance breed who needs little grooming and minimal exercise. They are loving, affectionate and protective of their owners and with the right owner, can be a great family companion.

Size and Lifespan
Extremely big at an average of between 70 and 76 cm in height, Mastiffs can weigh up to an astonishing 86 kg. Their average life expectancy is between 8 and 10 years, but can they can live to 12 if very well kept.
