Maltese

History & Origin / Background
A classic ‘toy dog’, the history of the Maltese is not exactly known. While many presume due to its name that its origins lie in Malta, this is not certain. We do know however that the Maltese is definitely one of the world’s oldest breeds. Records confirming this dog’s existence date back as far as 6000 BC.

Characteristics
A common misconception regarding the Maltese is that they are part of the terrier line. This is in fact not true. The breeding line of the Maltese is uncertain. These popular lap dogs have a distinctive long silky coat which can become matted, in particular around seven to eight months of age. While the Maltese will enjoy and appreciate regular exercise, they will equally revel in a sedentary lifestyle of pampering and care.

Temperament
Despite being far from a working dog, the Maltese does respond well to obedience training. Extremely gentle and affectionate, they love please others as much as they enjoy being pleased themselves. Good with children and strangers, the Maltese is an all round friendly breed.

Suitability as a pet
The most obvious factor to consider when thinking of the Maltese as a pet, is of course their coat and its grooming requirements. It requires heavy attention as it will easily gather mud and dirt when outside. It also must be groomed daily and regularly clipped to avoid knotting and the formation of mats. The perfect owner for these small, lovable dogs, is anyone who can provide them with the attention, love and grooming they require.

Size and Lifespan
Size usually ranges from 20 to 25 cm and weight between 2 and 3 kg. Life expectancy is roughly 14 years.
