Labrador

History & Origin / Background
Equally well known and loved, the Labrador is one of the world’s most popular breeds. Originating from Newfoundland in Canada, the Labrador, a type of retriever, was used predominantly by fisherman. As great water lovers and swimmers, they would swim out to help pull in nets and even catch fish that had escaped.

Characteristics
Labradors are intelligent, active and fun loving dogs. They can easily be trained to perform various tasks, from helping the blind to hunting, but will be equally as happy on the floor beside the fire as a family pet. Labradors have a particular fondness of water and will thoroughly enjoy any opportunity to swim. With a broad head, deep chest and well sprung ribs, Labradors can be found in yellow/gold, black and chocolate brown.

Temperament
Labradors are well known for their easy going temperament. Highly sociable and willing to please, it is unusual for a Labrador to be aggressive or hostile towards anyone, as they generally long to be everybody’s best friend. Especially good with children, Labradors are obedient and prepared to learn.

Suitability as a pet
The Labradors popularity speaks for itself. An extremely companionable breed who thrives off of human interaction, coupled with their patients and liking for children make them one of the world’s most popular family dogs. As with any dog, daily exercise is required, but nothing more excessive than a 30 minute walk. Their water resistant coat does shed, but only once a year.

Size and Lifespan
Ranging from 55 to 57 cm in height and 25 to 34 kg in weight, Labradors have an average life expectancy of 12 to 13 years.
