German Shepard

History & Origin / Background
Originally bred by Captain Max Von Stephanitz in Germany in the late 19th century, the German Shepherd has become one of the most popular breeds of dog in Europe and North America. Extremely intelligent and hard working, the German Shepherd can handle great responsibility with ease, becoming the dog of choice for police work, guiding the blind, tracking and herding sheep.

Characteristics
The German Shepherd has a distinctive head with pointed ears coupled with a strong and muscular set of hind legs. They are daring and courageous but still approachable and patient. A strong tendency to chase is present in all German Shepherds, as a result they thoroughly enjoy games and exercise on a regular basis.

Temperament
Level headed and calm, the German Shepherd is a breed with plenty of self-confidence. Early socialization is required with other pets and dogs to ensure tolerance, but this is rarely a problem when addressed as German Shepherds possess a great ability to learn and obey orders.

Suitability as a pet
Due to the high energy levels of the German Shepherd, potential owners should be aware of the high exercise requirements and this breed’s love of chasing. Their coats require some grooming as dead hair must be removed and it is not uncommon for hair to shed easily. Once their care requirements are met however, the German Shepherd will quickly become a loyal and fun-loving companion for many years.

Size and Lifespan
Typically 58 to 63 cm in height and between 34 and 43 kg in weight, German Shepherds have a life expectancy of roughly 12 to 13 years.
