Dog De Bordeaux

Dog De Bourdeaux

History & Origin / Background
It takes no genius to guess that the Dog De Bordeaux has its origins in France. An extremely powerful creature, most will recognise this breed as the co-star of the Tom Hanks movie ‘Turner and Hooch". We can tell from their enormous size and massive head, that the Dog De Bordeaux or French Mastiff was initially used for hunting larger game such as wild boars as well as guarding homes and farms.

Characteristics
The most distinctive feature of the Dog De Bordeaux is of course its incredible size. Its huge head sits upon a thick neck, attached to an extremely well muscled, powerful body. Its coat is short and smooth, while its face is covered in wrinkles. Although strong and robust, the Dog De Bordeaux has a heart of gold. They love to play and interact with adults and children alike, happily returning any affection they receive.

Temperament
Despite their size, French Mastiff’s are patient with a particularly calm temperament. They are territorial and will guard what they consider to be theirs with vigilance. While young, they are energetic and playful, jumping and biting everything in their paths. This should be discouraged, as once they reach full size this obviously because a much bigger problem.

Suitability as a pet
The Dog De Bordeaux is an enormous creature when fully grown and as a result requires a lot of space. A strong owner who is capable of handling these dogs when walked is also a must. The Dog De Bordeaux is certainly not the breed for everyone, simply due to its size, but once this can be catered for, you will easily find yourselves a loving, affectionate and caring giant of a companion.

Size and Lifespan
Typically between 58 and 69 cm in height and weighing between 36 and 45 kg, this breed can expect an average lifespan of 10 to 12 years.
