Dobermann

Dobermann

History & Origin / Background
Poised, obedient and fearless, the Dobermann originates from Germany in the 1900s. Although we do not know exactly which breeds were used for the creation of this intelligent watchdog, we do know that Louis Dobermann, a night patrolman, was responsible for their development. He required a quick and alert watchdog that was capable of retaining orders. He selectively chose the breeds he felt best for this task, and was clearly successful as the Dobermann is now commonly used as a police and war dog.

Characteristics
The Dobermann is a lean and athletic breed with a well muscled neck and a smooth hard coat. They can be found in four colours; fawn, blue, brown and black. Dobermann’s are particularly energetic and alert as a result of their breeding history as watchdogs, rarely showing signs of fear they will readily alert their owner at the smallest sign of intrusion.

Temperament
The Dobermann is by nature a strong willed breed. Capable of following orders to a tee, they are intelligent and observant. Dobermann’s will always be friendly and loyal towards their owner’s but are known for being reserved with those they are unfamiliar with.

Suitability as a pet
Due to their athletic physique, Dobermann’s require a lot of exercise on a regular basis. They do not however require much grooming as a result of their short and glossy coat. Experienced owners, willing to exercise and discipline these dogs as necessary are recommended. Dobermann’s almost thrive off of discipline and training, becoming bored and unhappy is this is not provided.

Size and Lifespan
Ranging from 65 to 70 cm in size and 30 to 40 kg in weight, Dobermann’s usually live an average of 12 years.
