Cocker Spaniel

History & Origin / Background
The Cocker Spaniel has two varieties, the American and the English. Both extremely popular family and companion dogs, the American version are a descendant of its English counterpart, with both proving extremely successful in the show ring. Originally, the English Cocker Spaniel was a worker, used on farms as a gun dog to rustle the bushes and drive game out for shooting.

Characteristics
The main difference between the English and the American Cocker Spaniels, is that the American has been bred to be a far more glamorous show dog with exaggerated features. Its coat is often thicker and longer, while the hair on its ears is shaggier with a more defined nose and jaw line. Despite their elegant appearance, due to their history as a hunting dog the Cocker Spaniel has a sturdy athletic body and can be capable of impressive speeds.

Temperament
Both breeds of Cocker Spaniel require and thrive off of human interaction. Often calm and indifferent, they need company and care, making them an ideal family.

Suitability as a pet
Cockers, due to their long and wavy coats, require regular grooming. Trimming of their coat is essential to prevent knots and dirt/mud accumulation. They are happy to live both in or outside the house and are not fussy eaters, so will eat almost anything. Cocker Spaniels are lovable, intelligent and calm, which is why they are so popular amongst families in both the UK and across America.

Size and Lifespan
The English Cocker Spaniel is slightly bigger averaging 38 to 41 cm in size and 13 to 15 kg in weight. The American is typically 36 to 38 cm and 11 to 13 kg. Both breeds typically live an average of 13 years.
