History & Origin / Background
The Chihuahua takes its name from the Mexican city of the same name, where they were initially transported to mainland America. The classic ‘toy dog’, the Chihuahua is the world’s smallest known breed.
Characteristics
There are two types of Chihuahua. The short and the long coated. The short, as the name would suggest, has a tight, smooth coat with a sharp pointed tail. The long coat variety has a flat or curly coat with a longer, fluffier tail. Both types adore human company and are understandably reserved around other dogs bigger than it.
Temperament
Happy and energetic, it would not be in the nature of a small and defenceless creature to be aggressive. Chihuahuas are gentle and most at home when in the lap of their owner.
Suitability as a pet
The Chihuahua is a low maintenance breed with minimal care requirements. Due to their size, they eat very little and do not need much exercise. They are playful and good with kids, but do not bode well in colder climates. Their size also makes them ideal for town houses or apartments.
Size and Lifespan
The smallest of all breeds, the Chihuahua weighs in at a miniscule average of 1 to 3 kg. 15 to 23 cm in size, Chihuahuas have a particularly long life expectancy of between 14 and 18 years.
