History & Origin / Background
Named after King Charles II of England, who had an obsession with canine companions, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a breed that has thrived on human company for years. They also rose to TV stardom in the 20th century as a pet of one of the main characters in ‘Sex and the City’.

Characteristics
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is small, elegant and lovable. Their coat is long and silky with a slight wave but no curl, while their endearing eyes are wide dark and brown. Cavalier King Charles’ are unique in their adaptability to lifestyle. If long walks and exercise are the owner’s preference, it is more than happy to oblige. Similarly it will be equally as cheerful sitting at home by the fire. As a result they are suited to both town and country living.

Temperament
King Charles Spaniels have no noticeable temperament to speak of. They are rarely aggressive and more than happy to adjust to its owner’s daily routine. No extensive obedience training is required, though as puppies they can be particularly curious, wandering off and digging a lot.

Suitability as a pet
First and foremost, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a people orientated dog. They thrive off human interaction and relationships and should not be left alone for long periods of time. They are gentle, caring and due to their cooperative attitudes, will rarely disobey. It is important to note that they shed their coat twice a year and require a well fenced in area when young to avoid escape.

Size and Lifespan
Due to growing popularity and as a result excessive in-breeding, certain lines have developed heart conditions that have shortened expected lifespan from 14 to around 10 years. They are typically 5 to 8 kg in weight and 31 to 34 cm in size.
