History & Origin / Background
Originally bred in Germany in the early 19th century, the boxer takes its name from its tendency to stand on its hind legs, while using its front legs to swipe at opponents. The boxer is strong and powerful with a mighty bite; this is a result of their history as a hunting dog. They would chase large game and latch onto their neck until horseback riders arrived.
Characteristics
Despite its tough and muscular physical appearance, the Boxer is a surprisingly gentle and loving breed. They are full of energy, love to play and have a particular liking for and patience with children. This, coupled with their short, low maintenance coat makes them popular as a family dog.
Temperament
Contrary to their aggressive image, Boxers are notably even tempered. They are known for their affection and loyalty to owners, resulting in a kind and loving creature that is rarely disobedient.
Suitability as a pet
The Boxer can almost be considered the perfect family dog. Its well muscled physique and quick reactions make it an ideal guard dog, yet it is tolerant and calm with children. They require little grooming but a lot of exercise and will quickly build a strong relationship with any owner.
Size and Lifespan
Boxers live an average of 8 years, but can reach 10 if well fed and exercised. They are a medium sized dog growing anywhere from 53 to 63 cm and weighing between 25 and 32 kg.
