Border Terrier

Border Terrier dog photoHistory & Origin / Background
Just like the Collie of the same name, the Border Terrier originates from the border region of England and Scotland. Bred as a hunting dog who was big enough to keep pace with horseback riders but also adequately agile to chase foxes out of their holes, the Border Terrier is an alert and athletic breed.

Characteristics
Combining bravery and courage with playfulness and affection, it is the Border Terriers unique personality that has them both family and farm favourites. They are obedient working dogs who love activity, but are also more than willing to laze about the house. Its long and study legs allow it to be both quick over distances and agile over uneven territory.

Temperament
Border Terriers are obedient and well tempered. It is in their nature to be well behaved and calm, accounting for their popularity as a family dog.

Suitability as a pet
The Border Terrier will suit first time owners perfectly as its coat is low maintenance and requires no extensive obedience training. Nearly always happy and affectionate, the Border Terrier also reacts well with children and strangers. Like with any dog, walking is essential, but is far from a chore with these hardnosed, yet loveable creatures.

Size and Lifespan
Maximum weight can be between 5 and 7kg while size can vary from 25 to 29cm. Average lifespan can be up to 14 years.
