History & Origin / Background
As its long thick coat would suggest, the Bernese Mountain dog originates from the cold mountainous regions of Switzerland. A strong powerful breed, the Bernese Mountain dog was originally used on farms as a worker, helping to pull carts and heavy loads.
Characteristics
Bernese Mountain dogs are strong and protective. In the 1930s they were bred for guarding, which has resulted in an unpredictable aggressive streak in some lines. They have powerful legs, a long, smooth, thick black coat with white chest and feet.
Temperament
As a working dog, the Bernese Mountain is an obedient and willing breed. However, due to their protective nature, they often show signs of aggression. As a result these animals require strict obedience training. However, once this is in place, one can expect a gentle giant who is easy going and affectionate.
Suitability as a pet
Due to their large size and incredible physical strength, Bernese Mountain dogs require an equally robust owner to handle them. Extensive obedience training is a must, as well as regular exercise. Better suited to cold climates the Bernese Mountain dog sheds its coat twice a year and requires a good diet to grow and maintain its size. While a loving and affectionate breed, a strong and experienced owner is recommended.
Size and Lifespan
A large breed that grows between 58 and 70cm the Bernese Mountain dog can weigh up to 45kg. An average lifespan of 8 to 9 years can be expected.
