Beagle

Beagle dog photoHistory & Origin / Background
Most will recognise the Beagle as the quintessential English hunting dog. Beagles were originally bred in the 1500′s to hunt rabbits in large packs of 12 to 24. Today however the Beagle is a popular house dog due to its size, lack of aggression and independent nature.

Characteristics
Beagles are by nature loyal companions. Their small stature coupled with their fond and loving attitude towards owners, is what has made them extremely popular as a family pet. Beagles are also an independent breed and like any dog originally bred for hunting, they can often ignore commands in favour of following their nose. They have a short coat that is easily cared for and can be found in almost any combination of colours.

Temperament
Despite their history as hunters, Beagles are for the most part passive creatures. They thoroughly enjoy the company of humans of any age and very rarely show signs of aggression.

Suitability as a pet

Beagles can be considered a low maintenance dog. They require exercise, but not in excessive amounts and should always be walked on a lead due to their tendency to follow their nose. Beagles interact well with children and are extremely tolerant creatures. When shown the appropriate love and care Beagles will always reciprocate.

Size and Lifespan
A Fully grown Beagle can reach between 33 and 40cm, weighing between 8 and 14kg. When properly looked after they can live as long as 13 years old.
