Basset Hound

Basset Hound dog photoHistory & Origin / Background
Originating from France in the late 1500′s, the Basset Hound is an instantly recognizable breed. Despite their almost comical lazy appearance, the Basset Hound was initially bred as hunting dogs. Due to its low set nature and incredible sense of smell, the Basset Hound was regularly used in the hunting of rabbits and hares.

Characteristics
Basset Hounds are low set with short legs, long ears and a hard, smooth, short coat. Their appearance is bordering on cartoonish and their friendly nature makes them the perfect family dog. Due to their history as a hunting dog their sense of smell can often take over, leading them to wander wherever their nose may take them.

Temperament
Tranquil and even tempered, Basset Hounds rarely show signs of aggression. They should be friendly towards strangers and affectionate and loving towards children and owners alike.

Suitability as a pet
The Basset Hound is a small breed of dog making them suitable for both country and city living. They react well with children and other pets and do not require excessive exercise. Care must be taken when walking as their sense of smell can lead them astray. With this in mind a well fenced garden is paramount as they well often follow their nose over their eyes. The basset Hound is a placid yet loving breed that suits everyone from first time to experienced owners.

Size and Lifespan
The average lifespan of a Basset Hound is 10 years but one can expect a lifespan of 12 years if cared for with a well balanced diet. Typical size range is 33 to 38cm in height and 18 to 27kg in weight.
