Alaskan Malamute

Alaskan Malamute dogHistory & Origin / Background
Most commonly mistaken as a Husky, the Alaskan Malamute is named after the Inuit tribe ‘Mahlemut’ originating from the North American state of Alaska. The Alaskan Malamute is famous today for its tireless work as a sled puller and it was for this purpose that it was originally bred.

Characteristics
Alaskan Malamutes are an extremely strong dog known for their outstanding endurance and stamina. Built with a thick coarse coat and heavily muscled legs, it is easy to see how this dog fares well pulling large loads in ice cold climates. Despite its physical strength and aggressive ‘wolf like’ appearance, the Alaskan Malamute is in fact a friendly compassionate dog.

Temperament
Due to their history as working dogs Alaskan Malamutes respond well to human interaction and are intelligent and loving towards people. This makes them an ideal family dog. Due to its strong will this breed must be trained early as it can easily develop an aggressive attitude towards other dogs if not properly socialized. They are eager to gratify their owner and make great companions.

Suitability as a pet
The Alaskan Malamute is a breed with tones of energy. As a result, urban living may not be suitable as plenty of space for regular exercise is required. Potential owners must be aware of its physical demands and the time needed to devote to proper care of this dog. However, once these needs can be met, the Alaskan Malamute has a natural love for people and interaction and can easily become a great friend and an affectionate companion. Due to the thick nature of its coat, Alaskan Malamutes prefer cold climates to avoid overheating. They are capable of sleeping outdoors.

Size and Lifespan
The average Alaskan Malamute can live up to 12 years typically growing to a size of 58 to 71cm and weight of 38 to 55kg.
