Akita

Akita dog puppy photoHistory & Origin / Background
Originating from Japan in the 1600’s, the Akita was originally bred to hunt, guard and even fight other dogs. “Akita” is a Japanese term which relates to its size as the largest of the Japanese breeds. Often noted for its proud appearance and courageous nature, the Akita historically has served many rolls from fisherman’s workmate to hunters of large game.

Characteristics
The Akita is reserved and can be shy towards strangers, which is an indication of its independent nature. Due to their history as a hunting/fighting dog, they are extremely brave, determined and unafraid to stand their ground. A strong muscular dog with small eyes and triangular ears, the Akita can be found in almost any colour.

Temperament
The Akitas temperament can vary greatly from steady to aggressive. This aggressive streak can be tamed if well socialized by a patient and experienced owner but it is important to note that the Akita is by nature is a territorial dog.

Suitability as a pet
As a result of the Akitas temperament and behaviour, an experienced and strong willed owner is recommended. Obedience training can take time with an Akita as this breed is one who must learn who is ‘leader of the pack’. However, with the right time and effort a loyal and loving companion can certainly be found. It is important to note that the Akita sheds its coat two to three times a year and as a result cannot be kept indoors during these periods. With this in mind, potential owners should ideally have an outdoor area for exercise and sleep during this time.

Size and Lifespan
A medium size, well built dog ranging from 61 to 71cm. The Akita can weigh anywhere between 35 and 50kg. When well looked after a lifespan of up to 12 years can be expected.
