Five Dogs Stolen from Heathlawn Animal Shelter – Galway SPCA Call for their Return

The Galway Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is calling for any information on the whereabouts of 5 dogs that were stolen in a raid of the Heathlawn animal sanctuary on Saturday night.

Some of the dogs are recovering from serious surgery and are in need of urgent follow-up medical care.

Also taken was the sanctuary’s supply of leads, collars and other equipment.

The organisation expressed their dismay at the robbery in an urgent newsflash, “Such a horrific thing to happen to these poor animals who have already been through so much in their lives. When will this ever end???”

Pictured is Kanute, a male husky taken in the vicious break-in. Please check the GSPCA’s website for more pictures and info on the stolen dogs.

Anyone with any information is being urged to contact Portumna Garda Station – 0909 741 004 or the Garda Confidential line – 1800 666 111. The GSPCA’s Facebook will be updated with any further details.

The animal welfare association pleaded further with the public to come forward with any information: “Stolen from Heathlawn. All Micro chipped. If you have knowledge to the whereabouts of these dogs, some still need urgent vet care and medication . PLEASE contact Portumna Garda station or any Garda station. PLEASE don’t be silent, we need to get these animals back. These animals will be no use to anyone, as sadly they stole the ones that need immediate care.”

ISPCA Better Together/Hay Drive Appeals

The ISPCA are this week asking their supporters to help them out with two very important campaigns.

Ireland’s leading animal welfare charity has been shortlisted for the Better Together Charity Awards. €10,000 is at stake for the organisation which receives the most individual donations. It is not about how much money you donate – every single contribution, big or small, will count towards putting them in first place! The closing date is this Friday, the 25th of November. They are currently coming second – please make a donation to help put them in the lead.

As well as this, they are launching their ISPCA Hay Drive in the coming week. The sad truth is that many horses, ponies and donkeys will die of starvation this winter in Ireland as a result of neglect or abandonment. Just €3 will provide a bale of hay for a needy equine – you can donate by texting the word Hay to 57802 or by making a pledge online. The Hay Drive will be officially launched on Ryan Tubridy’s radio show next Tuesday, but you can kick off the campaign by making a commitment today.

Sign up to the ISPCA’s newsletter to receive regular updates on their work.

Welfare of Greyhounds Bill Passed

Shane McEntee, the Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine this week welcomed the passing of the Welfare of Greyhounds Bill 2011 by the Senate. All that is required now is for the new President to sign it into law. It is most likely to be the first piece of legislation that Michael D. Higgins will put his signature to.

The Bill promises to “to provide for the welfare of greyhounds, regulate the operation of greyhound breeding establishments and establish a register of greyhound breeding.”

The Minister of State said: “My officials and I have consulted widely with all the interested parties in relation to the Bill.  The result is a Bill that has cross-party support, putting in place a modern, comprehensive framework – with appropriate sanctions – to ensure nothing but the very best levels of welfare for our greyhounds

As well as the significance this holds for the welfare of greyhounds, it will also help to stabilise and regulate a very important part of the economy. According to Bord na gCon, the greyhound industry provides 11,000 full-time and part-time jobs in Ireland, both directly and indirectly – many of which are in rural areas.

Animal Abuser Caught on CCTV Swinging Cat by Tail

The RSPCA are urging the British public to come forward with information on the identity of a man caught abusing a cat on CCTV.

Shocking footage shows a seemingly unhinged attacker strutting down a road in Ramsgate, Kent, swinging a cat by its tail. The horrific video was captured on the 29th of October outside the Camden Arms pub.

This was a very violent, nasty attack on a cat. Anyone who witnessed this outside the pub must have been as shocked and appalled as we were. We are hoping that someone will recognise this man and come forward so we can investigate this fully,” says RSPCA inspector Caroline Doe.

Luckily, Mowgli the cat escaped the incident without serious physical injury. Owner Michelle Buchanan says that her pet has not been left unaffected by the attack: “When I got home he was in my bed so that he would feel secure…Mowgli is emotional. He’s just distraught. He won’t go out the door.”

The IT teacher, who owns two other cats named Milly and Missy thinks that all three are disturbed by the mistreatment. “Before this happened my cats used to sit outside the house on the steps and everybody knew them. Since then none of them do that.”

This act of animal cruelty reflects the infamous episode when Mary Bale was caught on CCTV throwing a cat in a wheelie bin. Bank worker Bale was fined £250 and ordered to pay the cat’s owners compensation and costs of £1,400.

The video below shows footage which some of our readers might find disturbing:
