The north of Ireland’s Minister for Agriculture, Michelle Gildernew, is concerned that the recent crackdown on illegal dog-fighting in the north could push the problem over the border.
Dog fighting is an underground and illegal sport that involves betting against animals in bloody fights, often to the death. Its presence is known about and local governments are trying to eradicate the problem. Other barbaric sports like badger-baiting and cock-fighting are being cracked down on too. Two years ago an investigation by the BBC into dog-fighting in the North uncovered 15 illegal dog-fighting gangs.
The ministers for agriculture, north and south of the border, have agreed upon a new Animal Health and Welfare Strategy. The new strategy should help tackle issues such as: reducing the spread of animal disease, free movement of animals on the island and a united effort against animal cruelty.
